From spring thaw in Heber City to the first cold snap on the Wasatch Back, here's what's typically active each season across our mountain-elevation, high-desert service area — and the real service that handles it.
As snow melts off the Wasatch benches and daytime temps climb, overwintering pests wake up and start looking for a way inside before the ground even fully thaws.
Odorous house ants
The most common trail-forming ant along the Wasatch Front and Back wakes up early, scouting kitchens and foundations for food and moisture as the ground warms.
Box elder bugs
Bugs that overwintered in wall voids and attics head back out to sun-warmed south- and west-facing exterior walls, often in visible clusters.
Wasp queens
A single surviving queen emerges alone in spring to start a new nest under eaves, in a shed, or under a deck — the easiest point in the year to stop a colony before it grows.
Mice
Mice that spent winter in walls or crawlspaces start ranging further for food as outdoor temps rise, which is often when droppings or gnaw marks first get noticed.
Spider hatchlings
Spring hatchlings show up in higher numbers in garages, window wells, and landscaping beds as the insects they feed on become active again.
Summer heat drives the fastest colony growth of the year — pests that started small in spring are at their most active by mid-summer.
Yellowjackets

Anywhere water collects and sits — irrigation heads, gutters, kiddie pools — becomes a breeding spot once summer heat sets in.
Earwigs
Earwigs move into mulch beds, under patio stones, and near foundation cracks during the hottest, driest stretch of summer.
As the first cold snaps hit higher elevations in the Wasatch Back, pests that spent summer outdoors start moving toward the warmth and food inside a home.
Rodents moving indoors
Mice at higher elevation — Heber City, Midway, the Wasatch Back — are often the first to push toward buildings, since overnight temps drop there before the valley floor sees frost.
Spiders peak indoors

Cluster flies gather on the same sunny exterior walls as box elder bugs at the same time of year, seeking the same overwintering entry points into attics and wall spaces.

Rodents indoors
Rodent activity peaks indoors in winter, since mice and voles that got in during fall are now fully settled into walls, attics, and storage areas.
